Self-taught Sewist

Self-taught Sewist
Oh hey!

I’m so glad you stopped by

I’m Rachael, stay at home mom of three and passionate self-taught sewist. I used to think sewing clothes was for people who went to school for fashion or sewing. I never thought I’d be able to make my own clothes myself. But then I had my first baby and had to get rid of most of my wardrobe due to all the postpartum changes. I really struggled with finding clothing that fit my body and my style that I could afford. So, out of desperation, I took the leap and bought my first sewing machine. It was old and a bit clunky, but it was the perfect starter machine for someone inexperienced like I was.

My first sewing project was far from perfect. But each time I made something I got a little bit better. Once I got the hang of the basics, I started learning about how to adjust patterns and even draft my own. Along the way I also learned how to save money by thrifting fabrics.

As a mom of littles, life is busy, and even crazy sometimes. I don’t have the luxury of hours to spend sewing pieces for my wardrobe. But I make time for it because it’s important to me. You’ll often find me spending my evenings working on a project or sitting on the couch doing some mending.

“Sewing isn’t just for those who have a knack for it.”

I became a self-taught sewist in the middle of raising littles with nothing but a strong desire to be able to have clothes I love without the huge price tag. I had very limited experience using a sewing machine and knew absolutely nothing about patterns and different fabrics.

Yet here I am, making clothes that reflect my style and feel so comfortable and easy to wear. I still make mistakes and have to spend time ripping apart something I just sewed together. But each time I start a new project I know just a little bit more and get a little bit better. I believe there is no such thing as a failed project, it’s just a lesson learned.

I want to share with you everything I’ve learned so you can have the same success and maybe even skip some of the mistakes I made out of the gate. Everyone deserves to have a wardrobe that fits them and their needs. You can have it too, you just have to want it badly enough.
